The Halifax Hat is a fun crochet hat pattern that uses the fair isle crochet technique.

This technique is similar to tapestry crochet, but instead of working over your yarn, you just let it float behind the stitches until you change colors.

The Halifax Hat is a great project if you’re just learning this technique because it only uses two colors and a repetitive color change count.

Pattern Inspiration

I’ve been really into the fair isle crochet technique lately, and have designed a number of crochet patterns using this technique. I wanted to create a crochet hat pattern that used this technique but was beginner friendly.

I created this hat using Stitch Fiddle and two colors. I just love the simplicity of it. It is a great unisex crochet hat for anyone!

Pattern Details

This pattern calls for worsted (#4) weight yarn in two colors. For my sample, I used Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran in the colorways Dusty Rose and Pansy Purple.

Paintbox Simply Aran is a great 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn. It is soft and sturdy and comes in a large variety of colors. It’s great for so many different kinds of projects.

The crochet hat pattern is rated intermediate, but only because it uses the fair isle crochet technique. It uses single crochet stitches in two variations and the color changes are really easy to do.

To follow chart, start with row 15 and work your way across each column, left to right. Then work your way up each row.

Row 15 = Round 2 in written instructions.

Photo Tutorial to change colors when making hat.
To change colors, instead of finishing out the last stitch before you go to the next color, pull the next color through the 2 loops for the last step of your stitch. This will finish out your last stitch and start you off with the new color for your next stitch.
Photo Tutorial to catch float when making hat.
To catch your float when working 7 stitches or more in the same color, simply grab your non-working yarn when working a middle stitch and then drop it again until your next color change.

There you have it! I hope the written instructions with the chart makes it easy for you to work up, but if you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time!

    1. Recently I started naming my patterns after cities around the world and this one is after Halifax in Canada. 🙂

  1. Thanks for the beautiful pattern! On the sizing, are the measurements for the head size or the hat size?

  2. AWESOME! I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, can’t wait to make this hat. Thank you for the pattern…..Janice

  3. I used a 4.00 mm (G) hook for my gauge and it came out exactly 4 inches. And the brim of the hat says to go down one hook size from the hook you met gauge with…that would be 3.75 (F) hook. But the body of the hat says go back to the hook you met gauge with. My question is where do I use the J hook? This is for the Halifax Hat.

    1. If you met gauge with G hook that’s what you’ll use and go down one for the brim. You won’t need a J hook.
